For a business best known for its steak slice and traditional sausage rolls, it has been a remarkable turn of events this past couple of months for bakery chain Greggs. Its launch of a vegan sausage roll as part of the Veganuary trend has helped the company enjoy what it describes as an “exceptionally strong start” to the current year.

There is no doubt Greggs was jumping on the vegan bandwagon when it pitched such a product to the growing number of people adopting a vegan diet or flexitarian approach but with a bit of celebrity recognition, demand for its Quorn-based vegan sausage roll went off the charts.


Scholarship launched in the name of Chef Andrew Fairlie

A scholarship providing career-changing opportunities to young chefs working or studying in Scotland has been launched in the name of two-Michelin-starred chef Andrew Fairlie.

Hospitality Industry Trust (HIT) Scotland has revealed details of the inaugural Fairlie Scholarship, which will recognise the lasting contribution of the multi-award winning chef and founder of Scotland’s only two-Michelin-starred restaurant, Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles.

As 2018 draws to a close there are so many questions we ask ourselves at the end of each year and beginning of the next.  Did I achieve what I set out to achieve?

The ongoing Brexit negotiations are definitely still having a negative impact of our industry, coupled with so many daily reports of restaurant closures, chef and skill shortages. I think it is fair to say 2018 has been another challenging year with lots of instability still around into next year too.

However, dotted in between these difficult and challenging times we have still enjoyed many successes including meeting so many passionate and talented candidates and been a part of so many highlights for our clients too!

NPD Group reveals five eating out trends that will shape the industry in 2019: Insights firm The NPD Group has identified five new trends that will shape Britain’s £56bn out-of-home (OOH) foodservice industry in 2019. The company said delivery, veganism, transparency, the environment, and virtual restaurants would be the watchwords for next year.

Delivery aggregators will thrive as consumers cocoon themselves indoors

The NPD Group stated: “Driven by technology, the rise in in-home entertainment subscription services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime and a desire to save money, consumers are likely to “cocoon” more and eat more meals at home. Consumer spend on restaurant food delivery could grow 10% in 2019 to reach £5bn. Delivery already plays to consumer needs for convenience and enjoying a “treat”. In the future, consumers wanting to order and eat at home will have more complex requirements, ordering from OOH operators as well as grocery outlets. Aggregators such as Deliveroo, Just Eat and UberEats will reap greater rewards through subscription and loyalty programmes. Look out for foodservice brands partnering with in-home entertainment providers. Winners will be the OOH delivery aggregators that provide consumers with value for money and a good experience, while offering meaningful partnerships and innovative loyalty schemes.”

There are times when you leave a pub or restaurant and think “that was OK but I wouldn’t rush back”. It wasn’t bad enough to complain or leave a comment about but you wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. In fact, not only do you not return to that specific venue, you blank the brand altogether. That happened to me years ago in a Prezzo – I never went back. It happened to me in a Jamie’s – I only ever use the brand in airports. It happened in a Beefeater – even the move to new branding didn’t persuade me. CAU wasn’t great when I took my family once so I never bothered again.


None of them were bad experiences, they were just average – and average doesn’t cut it any more. As we all know, average brands find it challenging to survive and none of us are surprised when we hear news of yet another CVA or administration.

BigDish sets out plan to bring dynamic pricing to UK restaurant sector: BigDish, the food tech company that operates a yield management platform for restaurants, has provided an update on its UK growth strategy. BigDish completed the 100% acquisition of Pouncer on the day of Admission, 2 August 2018. Prior to the Acquisition, BigDish had been working with Pouncer since January 2018 to redevelop the existing TablePouncer platform and implement the Company’s yield management system. This is currently successfully operating in the Philippines, Indonesia and Hong Kong.
